How do I know the Durst SmartWasher is safe?
ChemFree Corporation has performed numerous standardized tests to check for the presence of hazardous substances. Copies of some of these tests (VOC, TCLP, pathogenicity) are included on the Durst SmartWasher specs page. Additional information is available from Durst Industries upon request
Ozzy is the one of many microbes in the Durst SmartWasher that eat the hydrocarbon wastes -- and only the hydrocarbons. Ozzy and similar microbes are naturally-occurring and have been used in many types of bioremediation projects, including the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
The OzzyMat will trap the large solid particles and the rest will be rinsed through the OzzyMat and into the fluid reservoir in the base of the Durst SmartWasher. The Ozzies in the reservoir will eat away at the hydrocarbons, breaking them down into carbon dioxide (which is dispersed into the atmosphere as a gas) and water (which goes back into solution and eventually evaporates). This combination of the OzzyMat and Ozzy leaves you with nothing but clean solution to work with.
As with all parts cleaners, excessive greases, oils, and fluids should be disposed of prior to washing. The Durst SmartWasher can handle large, tough, dirty jobs, but was not designed to be - nor should it be treated as - a waste oil dump.
How quickly can Ozzy break down oil and grease?
Once activated, Ozzy and his friends are constantly eating. The rate at which the hydrocarbons will be remediated is approximately 80% every 7 days, assuming the system is operating optimally (fluid temperature between 100 and 110 degrees F, OzzyMat changed monthly). Oil and grease analyses performed on used Durst SmartWasher fluid consistently average around 1400 parts per million (versus used non-bioremediating aqueous cleaners that average 20,000 parts per million or more).
Yes, you need to keep biocides (chemicals that kill animals, such as rat poison) out of the Durst SmartWasher. The same goes for bleach and Lysol. Ozzy can survive among greases, oils, mineral spirits, plant fertilizers, etc.
What do I do if the OzzyMat clogs up with grease?
You can rinse excessive grease from the OzzyMat directly into the fluid reservoir. Lift the false bottom of the sink and use the faucet to rinse the grease into the bottom of the sink. This should prolong the usefulness of the OzzyMat, but the entire OzzyMat still needs to be changed every month!
The OzzyMat must be disposed of in a non-leaching manner. In many areas, placing the OzzyMat in a plastic bag, sealing it closed, and disposing of the package as solid wastes - in accordance with federal, state and local regulations - is all that must be done. If you have any questions, please contact the ChemFree Compliance Officer. For more information click here.
At least once every month. This simple act accomplishes three things. First, it keeps trapped contaminants from reaching hazardous levels. Secondly, Ozzy is introduced to the system through the OzzyMat. Every time the OzzyMat is changed, fresh Ozzys are added to the existing colony, keeping the system working at an optimum level. Lastly, if the OzzyMat is allowed to become clogged, large contaminants can flow into the reservoir via the overflow holes, potentially causing sludge to build up.
How often do I change the fluid?
Under normal use, and proper maintenance, you should never have to change the solution. That is one of the biggest advantages of the Durst SmartWasher. Ozzy cleans the solution of contaminants, leaving you clean solution to work with. Hydrocarbon materials are bioremediated in the Durst SmartWasher so your "used" solution does not need to be hauled away as hazardous waste.
How often do I add fluid to the Durst SmartWasher?
With normal use, it will be necessary to add OzzyJuice every six to eight weeks. The Durst SmartWasher is equipped with an indicator light that will let you know when it is time to add fluid.
Can I just add water to the Durst SmartWasher to adjust the fluid level?
No. Even though the system fluid is water based and additional water will not "hurt" anything, it will dilute the fluid and negatively impact the cleaning power.
Can I buy OzzyJuice as a concentrate and mix it with water myself?
No. ChemFree pre-blends the OzzyJuice cleaning fluid concentrate with specially treated water at the factory to insure the best quality of OzzyJuice is put into the Durst SmartWasher. By shipping a concentrate for blending at the customer site, quality and performance cannot be guaranteed due to vast differences in the qualities of water across the country. Different minerals and chemicals found in many municipal water systems may actually be harmful to Ozzy and greatly reduce the cleaning effectiveness of the OzzyJuice.
Extremely well. Please note that the OzzyJuice does clean differently from older, more dangerous methods such as mineral spirits. Rather than dissolving grease like mineral spirits, OzzyJuice works to break the surface tension of the grease on the parts and actually lifts it off the parts. Do not be confused between cleaning differently and cleaning poorly. For tough grease, try Heavy Grease Formula OzzyJuice.
Does OzzyJuice clean carburetors, transmissions, aluminum, brakes, etc.?
Yes. Not only is OzzyJuice effective on these parts, it will not damage non-metal components that may be attached to the part being cleaned (e.g. rubber, plastic). As with all parts cleaners, some items are going to become cleaner at different rates than others due to the degree and type of grime encountered.
What color should OzzyJuice be?
OzzyJuice fresh from the container will be a light amber (tea) colour with a sweet scent. As the fluid is used to wash grease from parts, the odour will diminish and become slightly petroleum-y, and the colour of the fluid will become dark. This is normal - while the fluid appears to be "dirty", it has simply been dyed by the artificial colourings used in the oils and greases it is washing.
Why doesn't OzzyJuice damage my hands like my old parts washer?
Solvents are caustic bases that pull fat cells from the skin, causing extreme drying, redness, blisters, etc. OzzyJuice is a pH-neutral, noncaustic, water-based "soap" that will not dry, crack, or irritate the skin.
Can I use OzzyJuice in other parts washers?
OzzyJuice is an industrial strength, aqueous-based surfactant/degreaser. Because OzzyJuice is a superior cleaning agent, manufacturers of other parts washers have begun testing OzzyJuice for use in their machines. Please contact your supplier to determine if your parts washer is compatible with OzzyJuice.
The Durst SmartWasher parts cleaning system has been painstakingly developed to work effectively as a whole -- machine parts, fluid, and Ozzy. Other solutions may damage the machine or kill Ozzy, thereby eliminating the advantages of the Durst SmartWasher. The use of other solutions in the Durst SmartWasher will void the warranty.
Why is the Durst SmartWasher heated?
Two reasons. First, it keeps Ozzy eating at an optimal level to clean the solution as quickly as possible. Secondly, warm solution simply cleans better than cold solution (think about washing dishes in cold water versus warm). As an added benefit, the warm solution makes it more enjoyable to work with, especially in the winter.
No, the heater is automatically deactivated when the "Add fluid" indicator is illuminated. While the pump will continue to operate, the heater will not be reactivated until OzzyJuice is added to the system and the "Add fluid" indicator is off.
The Durst SmartWasher is fully warranted against defects for one year. For more details, refer to warranty reprinted below.
